When you look in the mirror, do you see skin that’s dull, rough-textured or dry? Are you noticing fine lines and wrinkles that weren’t there before? It’s possible that a technique called dermaplaning is a solution.
How Does It Work?
In dermaplaning, the dermatologist or aesthetician uses a scalpel to both exfoliate the skin, which takes away the dried out skin cells on top of the epidermis and remove vellus hair, or peach fuzz. Patients declare that dermaplaning is not just painless but their time in the treatment chair is actually relaxing. As an outpatient procedure, you can go home right after a session. You won’t even need to protect your skin from direct sunlight after dermaplaning, which is not true of so many other skin treatment therapies. All you really need to do is make sure that your skin stays hydrated.
What Happens During a Session?
During the session, you’ll sit in a treatment chair in our office. We will clean your face to remove any makeup, residual dirt and oils, and then pat your skin dry with gauze pads. We will then paint your face with an iodine solution, which makes peach fuzz easier to remove.
The aesthetician then uses a scalpel to dermaplane your skin. The blade is disposable and is always replaced after it is used on a patient. The dermaplaning usually begins at your forehead, then moves to your temples before it is applied to other parts of your face. After this, the aesthetician applies a vitamin C infusion to your treated skin. Vitamin C is an antioxidant, which protects your skin from free radical oxygen damage and helps the body produce collagen, which will keep your skin supple. The aesthetician then applies a moisturizer. You can leave the office soon after this.
Who is a Candidate?
Unlike some other types of skin care therapies, dermaplaning can be used on people with all kinds of skin, whether it is fair or dark. It is perfectly safe for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. People who have active skin lesions such as acne cysts or pustules should postpone dermaplaning until their condition clears up.
The Benefits
When the dead skin, or stratum corneum is removed, the body replaces it with new, young skin cells. It also produces a matrix of springy collagen beneath the layers of skin. This helps soften wrinkles, even out pigmentation and smooth the overall texture of the skin. Removing the peach fuzz helps to keep the skin clean, for the tiny hairs can trap dirt.
