The Role of Botox in Facial Harmony: Achieving Balanced Aesthetics

the role of botox in facial harmony advanced aesthetics

Aesthetic medicine is often described affectionately by practitioners as both an art and a science. The concept of facial harmony is a fitting example of this dual nature, as it requires merging technical know-how with the ability to envision perfect proportionality.

Botox is one of several anti-aging treatments that aesthetics professionals like our board-certified plastic surgeons at Advanced Aesthetics can use to promote facial harmony (also known as “facial balance”). We use Botox to optimize various areas of the face to visually blend with their surrounding features for a naturally beautiful look.

In this overview of the role of Botox in supporting facial harmony, we’ll cover how this concept works, examples of how Botox can improve facial harmony, and what to do next once deciding you’re interested in undergoing Botox treatments.

What Exactly Is Facial Harmony?

You may have heard that facial symmetry is one of the most important determinants of perceived beauty, and that’s true. But be careful not to confuse this concept of left-right symmetry with facial harmony, which refers to the proportionality of the face’s features to each other.

For example, you can still have a perfectly symmetrical face (rare, but it happens), but if the ratio of nose size to eye size is outside of a certain range, facial harmony suffers.

The concept goes well beyond comparing one facial feature to another, but rather, takes into account the geometry of the entire face. Botox or otherwise, the general idea when treating facial features to enhance harmony is to find the most efficient way to pull everything into closer alignment.

When most people think about altering their nose, eye area, chin, and so on to better match the rest of the face, they may first picture a rhinoplasty (nose job), brow lift, or other surgical approach. But when strategically applied by an expert in aesthetic medicine, Botox — a muscle-relaxing, wrinkle-smoothing injectable — can significantly improve facial harmony.

How Can Botox Enhance Facial Harmony?

The active ingredient in Botox relaxes the muscles that contribute to fine lines, which can affect several areas of the face. In addition to the harmonizing effect of wrinkle reduction, Botox can also subtly affect the positioning and appearance of various facial features, opening up many harmony-restoring and anti-aging possibilities.

The following is a non-exhaustive list of some of the most common ways in which Botox can improve facial harmony.

Correcting Asymmetries

As it happens throughout the body, asymmetries are often caused by an imbalance in muscle activity. For example, overactive muscles on one side of the face may cause a crooked smile.

This can manifest in several other locations throughout the face, and ranges from subtle differences that you may not even notice to more obvious issues. The brow, chin, cheeks, and eyes are all fair game for asymmetries to develop as the tissues around them gradually move them out of the optimal position.

Botox will relax the affected side of the face to help it match the other side for improved overall symmetry.

Jawline Slimming

Whether it’s simply your genetics or a result of teeth grinding, overdeveloped masseter (jaw) muscles can harm facial balance. The jawline may still appear fairly symmetrical when viewing the face head-on, but when pronounced enough, enlarged masseter muscles will cause the lower half of the face to visually clash with the upper half.

Botox makes for an excellent, non-surgical jawline slimming treatment, reducing the prominence of the jawline while retaining symmetry for significantly improved facial harmony. The result is a more slender and angular jawline, with pronounced cheekbones and an overall improved facial balance.

Lip Volume

No, Botox is not a dermal filler, but, when applied in the right area, it can still give the appearance of increased lip volume. It accomplishes this by relaxing the muscle that governs upper lip movement. As the muscle is relaxed, the lip curls upward, lending a more voluminous appearance.

In addition to this direct effect of causing an apparent increase in lip volume, injecting Botox around the upper lip can also treat or prevent fine lines, which are common to this area of the face. Like all the other changes we’ve discussed, lip volume is another “knob” that can be turned up to promote facial harmony.

Subtle Eyebrow Lifting

Similar to the method discussed just above, Botox offers an alternative to more invasive brow lift procedures by relaxing the muscles that hold the eyebrows in a lower position. Usually, the culprit is a muscle called the orbicularis oculi, which, when relaxed, allows the eyebrows not only to raise slightly, but to increase their arch.

Raising the eyebrows can fix two problems in one: repositioning the eyebrows themselves and opening up the eyes for a more youthful and alert appearance.
