What Is Hormone Replacement?
Hormone replacement is a therapeutic treatment option to manage and reduce the frustrating effects of changing hormone levels. Both men and women experience declines in the production as they age, which may cause:
- Anxiety or depression
- Chronic fatigue
- Difficulty focusing
- Low sex drive
- Mood swings
- Weight gain
Hormone replacement therapy provides balance to changing hormone levels to manage and reduce these frustrating effects.
The GOAL is to bring the system back into balance
- How do we do this?
To replace the missing hormone with an EXACT duplicate (Bio-identical duplicate, or
- native, or iso-molecular).
To receive all of the benefits of hormonal balance without the unnecessary risks of
- synthetic replacement.
What Is Low T?
Low T, or low testosterone, is a condition experienced by men. It is caused by the body not being able to produce enough of this important hormone. Testosterone is a male sex hormone that is essential for facilitating may body processes.
While each man will experience low T differently, it often leads to:
- Decline in sex drive
- Difficulty achieving and maintaining an erection
- Hair loss
- Loss of muscle mass
- Memory loss or brain fog
- Weight gain
Low T is often related to andropause, which men experience as they age.
The Benefits Of Pellets Vs. Injections
Many patients are curious about the subcutaneously implanted pellet as a method of hormone replacement therapy (HRT), and how it compares to injectable hormones. Pellets are “new” to most patients; however, they have been used clinically in the United States since the 1940’s. While there are pros and cons to every dosage form, pellets are often a smart choice for patients who have low hormone levels.
Pellets are superior to other modalities because of their duration of action and release kinetics. A typical patient will apply a hormone cream or gel twice-a-day or inject themselves every one-to-two weeks with a slow-release hormone, such as testosterone cypionate. Unlike the topical hormones, the injectable hormones come with the burden of a patient having to inject themselves, or travel to their doctor’s office every week or two to have the injection performed…not to mention the pain of the injection itself.
Creams and gels provide stable hormone levels, but can take weeks for their effects to be noticed by the patient. Injectable hormones produce sharp “peaks and troughs” in drug concentration in the time between the patient’s injections. Peaks can be dangerous, as the drug concentration will be higher than what is physiological for the patient, and troughs will leave the patient feeling unwell in the days leading up to their next injection.
Pellets are inserted subcutaneously under local anesthesia, by a trained practitioner. The long duration of action (3 to 6 months) of the pellet is preferred by patients whose busy schedules cannot include travel to a clinic every week for an injection or who are concerned about a cream transferring to their loved ones. Ultimately, the decision of which HRT dosage form is ideal for you and your lifestyle should be made with the input of your provider and compounding pharmacist.
Am I a Good Candidate?
Hormone replacement therapy may be beneficial for those who are experiencing changes to their hormone production levels. It is most often recommended to men experiencing andropause or low T and women experiencing menopause.
